1) Instead, we use "had to"

    Last night, I had to take care of the baby who was in pain.

            la nuit dernière j'ai dû m'occuper du bébé qui avait mal

2) we use the word "cannot" or the contracted form can't

      I can't play the violin but I'd like to be able to.

               je ne sais pas jouer du violon, mais j'aimerais savoir

3)  Before I was five, I couldn't swim, but now I can.  

          Avant 5 ans je ne savais pas nager, mais maintenant je sais

We cannot the word must in the past.

Instead we use HAVE TO

EXAMPLE : Last night, I  had to go to bed early because I had to get up early the following day.

When we are talking about something we are unable to do, we use the word cannot or the contracted form can't

EXAMPLE: I can't swim but I'd like to be able to.

If we are talking about something we were unable to do in the past, we us could not or the contracted form couldn't.

EXAMPLE : Before I was five, I couldn't run very fast, but now I can.
